What Limewash Actually Is
Limewash is made from crushed limestone mixed with water and natural pigments. It is a traditional, environmentally friendly finish that gives walls a soft, matte, chalky texture with visible brushwork and depth.[reference:16] It is not a standard emulsion with a fancy name — it is a mineral coating with different chemistry, different application and different behaviour in humidity.
Why Limewash Works Well in Singapore's Climate
Limestone is highly permeable, which prevents moisture from getting trapped beneath the coating. That breathability keeps the wall from turning damp and mouldy easily. Limewash is also highly alkaline, which gives it anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties.[reference:17] In a city where humidity sits above 80% for much of the year, a wall finish that lets moisture escape rather than trapping it has a real functional advantage.
Limewash also has zero VOCs — a meaningful point in air-conditioned HDB flats and condos where windows stay closed for long periods.[reference:18]
Where Limewash Works Best (And Where It Doesn't)
Limewash performs best on porous mineral surfaces such as plaster, brick and stone. Smooth surfaces like drywall or previously painted gloss need specific preparation before application.[reference:19]
| Good Candidates | Poor Candidates |
|---|---|
| Living room feature walls | Bathroom ceilings and shower walls |
| Bedroom accent walls | Kitchen walls directly behind hobs |
| Dining area walls with natural light | High-traffic corridors and children's play areas |
| Living areas in HDB and condo units | Exterior surfaces exposed to direct monsoon rain |
Durability is moderate. Sunlight and frequent activity can lead to discolouration and peeling over time, so limewash is best used on feature walls rather than every wall in a busy family home.[reference:20]
What Limewash Painting Costs in Singapore
Professional limewash application is more labour-intensive than standard painting. Engagement of professional painters can cost up to $10–20 per square foot, with a living room feature wall typically starting from around $1,000 including labour.[reference:21][reference:22] Specialist limewash packages in Singapore start from around $950 per wall for HDB, BTO and condo projects.[reference:23]
The higher cost is not arbitrary: limewash requires multiple thin layers, each of which must dry completely before the next. Depending on weather and humidity, this can take days for a single room.[reference:24]
Why DIY Limewash Usually Disappoints
DIY limewash is possible but tedious. The wall surface and humidity need to be at a specific standard, the powder-to-water ratio must be correct, and the application technique determines whether you get a soft patina or a patchy mess. Dirt or stains on the wall should not be wiped off before application — they leave patches in the limewash.[reference:25]
Most homeowners who try DIY end up paying a professional to redo it. The material saving is real, but the labour and risk are not worth it for a finish that is supposed to look effortless.
Is Limewash Worth It for an HDB Flat?
Yes — if you want a distinctive, natural texture on a feature wall and you understand the maintenance trade-off. It is not the right choice for every wall, and it is not a substitute for anti-mould paint in wet zones. Used deliberately, on the right wall, in the right room, limewash gives an HDB flat a level of visual depth that flat emulsion cannot match.
ASIL WORKS applies limewash on properly prepared plaster and drywall surfaces, with colour consultation and sealing included. We will tell you honestly which walls in your flat will benefit — and which will not.
